With pregnancy comes many joys as you plan for the addition of your new child. However, often it comes with discomfort as well—especially back pain. The good news is, a recent study reveals that chiropractic care is an exceptional way to soothe back pain throughout pregnancy. And in addition, the beneficial effects last not just throughout pregnancy, but long after you have delivered.
Researchers recruited 115 pregnant mothers who were (1) being affected by aches and pains in their back or pelvic region, (2) had not taken advantage of chiropractic attention during the prior 3 months, and (3) were not restricted from participation. Each woman then participated in chiropractic treatments, with the frequency of visits and modes of manipulation solely determined based on the advice of the chiropractor for each particular expecting mother.
Data was compiled at the first week, 1 month, three months, six months, and the first year past the preliminary chiropractic consultation to determine what improvement, if any, the women noticed with regards to their back pain. What they discovered is that the level of improvement in pain increased the more time went on.
For example, when asked after the first week of treatment sessions whether or not the subjects felt a decline in their degree of pain, over half said yes. That amount increased to 70 percent after the first month of treatment, then to 85 percent being happy with the results after just 3 months of chiropractic care. At the six month mark, 90% said that they noticed decreased pain in their back area, and the benefits carried on, with 88% noting positive effects 1 year after the original session.

Shoulder pain is a problem experienced by many car crash patients, and there are two common explanations.
The first is direct damage to the shoulder during the wreck. If your shoulder strikes something directly, it can damage the joint capsule. Also, if you are gripping the steering wheel tightly during a rear-end collision, your body can lag behind the car, applying tension on your wrists and shoulders.
The second cause of shoulder pain is not so straightforward and can be more challenging to diagnose. Damage to the neck or spine can produce tension on the nerve fibers that travel from the spine to your shoulder, arm, and hands. This can be confusing, as the discomfort or numbness is felt in one part of your body, while the problem is actually in your spine.
Chiropractic adjustments are a proven, successful way to help people with shoulder problems, and we've been working with these types of injuries in Charlotte, NC since 2001.
If you have been in a crash and have symptoms of shoulder injury, Dr. Gomez is here to help. We can help pinpoint the root source of your pain and develop a plan of action to help you reclaim your health. We've helped many people in Charlotte, NC improve from these types of injuries.

Is back and neck pain affecting your efficiency at work? You're not alone: musculoskeletal disorders like back pain and joint pain are the main cause of work absenteeism in the United States, according to the Council for Disability Awareness (CDA).
The Work Disability Study
In a report from the CDA, about one in three individuals (34%) claiming social security benefits for disability suffered with musculoskeletal diseases, along with 30.7% of workers making private insurance claims in 2013.
The CDA report examine data from workers claiming Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and data from 19 major insurers who insure over 32 million people in the U.S..
The report demonstrates an increase in the prevalence of musculoskeletal conditions in American workers. Between 1960 and 2011, the amount of people receiving SSDI for musculoskeletal diseases quadrupled.
Expanding rates of these diseases are likely the result of an aging working population. In 2012, the percentage of elderly adults claiming disability benefits grew for both private insurers and social security. Currently 57% of adults claiming private insurance disability benefits are over 50 years old. Overall 54% of claimants are women.

What Produces Neck Pain
Many issues can bring about soreness in your neck. Being involved in an auto accident can give you whiplash, as can other types of trauma to the neck. Sports injuries can lead to neck pain too, leaving you achy and sore.
Bad posture can also contribute to neck pain since the spine isn’t positioned in a way to adequately support your head. This can lead to muscle strain, headaches, and dizziness, which can further decrease your quality of life.
When you carry stress and anxiety in your upper body it can strain the neck muscles, causing aches and pain that extend from your shoulders to the top of your head.

Neck soreness is the most prevalent symptom recorded after an auto collision, and it's not hard to understand why. Dr. Gomez in Charlotte, NC has been assisting patients with neck pain from car accidents since 2001.
During a collision, your torso moves with the car seat while your head stays behind due to inertia. It is this difference in movement that leads to injury.
Your spine is prone to sprain and stress from shear forces that come from the head and body moving in different directions. This shearing action can stretch or tear the ligaments and discs of your spinal column, producing pain, irritation and scar tissue. Getting early treatment, is necessary in order to prevent chronic pain, especially because of the elevated risk of persistent symptoms in individuals with whiplash injury.
Researchers have established that up to 1 out of 5 patients can have neck pain signs or symptoms even ten years after the collision.
If you've been injured in a collision, chiropractic adjustments might be able to help. Studies show that chiropractic care can help restore neck range of motion and reduce the risk of scar tissue from forming after an injury. And other research shows that early treatment can also help prevent the development of persistent pain.
If you have been in a car crash and have symptoms of neck pain, Dr. Gomez is here for you. We can pinpoint the underlying source of your problem and formulate a plan of action to support you in restoring your health. We've helped many people in Charlotte, NC recover from these types of problems since 2001.

Do you want to understand the trick to effective back pain relief? It's not lying on your couch, suffering in pain while you wait for it to go away. It's not just doing your daily physical therapy and using ice packs. So what is it?
Exercise therapies are wonderful for musculoskeletal injury, but to get the total advantages of the physical activity you need to get treatment that corrects misalignments in the muscles plus the spine. That's where your Charlotte, NC chiropractor, Dr. Gomez, can help. If you have hurt your back, it is very likely that you have a spinal misalignment. Lengthening and strengthening your back muscles alone won't be enough to fix the out-of-place vertebrae. Recent research explains why combining physical therapy with chiropractic is so useful.
Researchers studied 49 patients with chronic back pain who were randomly assigned to receive either manual therapy or sham (placebo) treatment. Manual therapies consisted of procedures commonly employed by Dr. Gomez, like spinal adjustments and spinal mobilization. Immediately after treatment, patients did exercises like stretches, muscle and motor control workouts, mobility workouts, and strengthening. The clients were treated eight times, with an evaluation after three and six months.
Directly after treatment, patients receiving chiropractic plus exercise experienced better pain relief than the placebo plus exercise group. The advantage seen in the treatment room was sustained at the three and six-month follow-up sessions. The chiropractic participants had reduced disability and a trend towards lower pain scores compared to the sham group. These results indicate that a blended treatment of chiropractic and exercise could be better than exercise therapy alone for back pain.
So if you'd prefer total relief of back pain, pick up the phone and give our office in Charlotte, NC a call. After a few sessions with Dr. Gomez, you'll wonder why you didn't call sooner!

The authors found that many of those surveyed stated that their back pain caused them to lose work or resulted in their making errors on the job. Data suggests that not only can chiropractic reduce sports injuries, it may even give you a competitive edge. A study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics shows regular chiropractic cervical manipulation can boost grip strength. The findings could have relevant implications for competitors in racquet sports, martial arts, or baseball.
The study included 18 professional judo athletes who received either chiropractic care or a sham therapy. Researchers utilized a hydraulic dynamometer to gauge the force of athletes' grip strength immediately before and after each treatment. The authors specifically assessed grip strength because martial arts require significant upper-body strength. Therapy included three chiropractic neck adjustments. The patients treated with chiropractic had statistically significant improvements in grip strength, whereas the placebo therapy did not produce significant results. Generally chiropractic care increased grip strength by 10 to 16 percent.

We see many back pain patients in our Charlotte and Monroe chiropractic offices, and very often, we see back problems spread to other parts of the body. Left untreated, back pain can become sciatica or leg pain, shoulder pain, or even fibromyalgia. The key to avoiding these problems is to get to the root of your back pain, so that your spine can be pain-free. A new study shows that chiropractic can help with this.
In a study published in the prestigious Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers investigated 192 patients who had back-related leg pain for at least four weeks. Half of the patients were given chiropractic adjustments with home exercise and advice; the other half were just given the home exercise and advice component. The study ran for 12 weeks, and the chiropractic patients received up to 20 chiropractic adjustments over that time. The study participants were assessed at the beginning of the study, at 12 weeks, and at 52 weeks after the completion.
The authors found that:
- Chiropractic adjustments with home exercises "had a clinically important advantage" over home exercises alone at 12 weeks, but not at the 52 week follow-up.
- At the 12-week follow-up, the chiropractic patients had less back pain, less disability, better overall improvement, and better patient satisfaction.
- At the 1-year follow-up, the patients who received chiropractic care maintained their overall improvement and satisfaction with care.
- There were no serious adverse effects due to chiropractic adjustments during the study.
The authors concluded that chiropractic and home exercises combined, "is a safe and effective conservative treatment approach, resulting in better short-term outcomes," than exercise alone.

A number of people in Charlotte, NC have never seen a chiropractor, and if you've never received a chiropractic adjustment, you probably have some questions about how chiropractic actually works and how it can help you improve your overall health.
A common question we hear from brand new patients is: "How safe is chiropractic?"
For starters, there are about 60,000 chiropractors in the United States and these professionals see about 30 million patients. If each patient sees their doctor three times a year, that's about 90 million chiropractic adjustments each year in the United States. If chiropractic care wasn't safe, we'd definitely be hearing about it the news.
Secondly, there's real scientific research that shows that chiropractic is safe. The esteemed medical journal Spine shared an article in 2013 that evaluated 183 people in Australia. 92 of the people received some chiropractic adjustments; the other 91 people received a faux adjustment. The researchers had all of the study subjects complete a questionnaire inquiring about any side effects that the patients might have observed.
The study found that there were "no serious adverse events" from chiropractic adjustments. Some patients did experience muscle stiffness or a slight increase in pain immediately after the adjustment, but these were transitory.
Even the AMA recommends that patients see a chiropractor before considering more aggressive treatment, like surgery. In 2013, the Canadian Family Physician endorsed chiropractic care for pregnant women who want to avoid drugs. Furthermore, many of our patients bring their kids in for chiropractic care and some research shows that it can be beneficial for colic in babies.
